Flooding in Metropolis, IL. For anyone who is keeping up with disasters in the United States, this is one you may or may not have heard about. The Ohio river has been overflowing enough to nearly sink a few cities in Illinois and Kentucky these last few weeks. A disaster is the only word that can be used to describe the sites that we witnessed as we went into Metropolis to help those who were in danger of loosing their homes. As we put together our efforts in helping those in need, some amazing things began to take place. Things were not going to be easy in the fix and prevention, but that did not stop the people of Metropolis and nearby Paducah, KY. from helping one another through a difficult time.
With National Guard on the scene filling sand-bags, things began to move at a speed where nearly everyone could receive help if needed. Of course not everyone that absolutely needed help was able to get it, but there was nevertheless a sense of love in the air for fellow men. It's amazing to me how whenever something in a community or a nation occurs that is considered a " disaster, " people are suddenly brought to a remembrance of God, love, and the needs of those around them over their own. We see the same cycle published in humanities history through holy scripture. Both the Holy Bible and The Book of Mormon are filled with examples of times when people are slow to remember God in times of peace and blessing, and quick to remember the Lord in times of need. One of the best examples that I can think of is the Children of Israel in their journey out of Egypt and through the wilderness.
The Lord brought the Children of Israel out of slavery and the hands of Pharaoh, just to see them turn their backs on him and worship an idol. When they needed help, they turned to the one who would always offer it. When they thought that they were taken care of, they decided to put their own desires above that of the Lord's.
As we began to help people in Metropolis and other cities and communities in need, we saw the Love of the people for those in need begin to flourish. Dirt lots where filled with cars of people looking to offer a helping hand for anyone who needed it.
Helping hands and loving hearts came together for people who had no one to call on. We spoke with and worked hand in hand with many people who took time off of work and put aside other plans to help those whose homes and businesses where in danger. It was truly inspiring to see so many come together for the better good. My prayers go out to those who have been affected by these sad times, and my heart is filled with joy and love for those who helped their spiritual brothers and sisters, whether they knew who they were helping or not. I only pray that we will not be slow to remember the Lord in times of peace and prosperity like the Children of Israel. Let us all remember the words of the Savior found in John ch. 13 v. 34-35 " 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
